While suddenly being trapped in a Midgardian video game itself warrants plenty of questions, which I'm sure will get answered in time--

[He gets interrupted by a loud] Bliiiitz!

Shush, you. [He returns his attention to the screen.] Like I was going to say before my new friend here interrupted me, I have a far more important question. Do these devices have access to the Internet?

I don't think the Gear has access to 'the Internet'. What is that? And this... you're saying we're in a video game?

I'm going to be getting that question a lot, aren't I?

People from all kinds of different worlds are brought to Johto. I was and I... don't think that game exists in my world, if that's the case. I'd have definitely heard about it if it were from Midgar, though, unless...

[ Oh, wait. ] I don't suppose you're talking about Midgar the city, are you? On Gaia?

[Now it's probably his turn to be confused. What does the all-mother have to do with thi--oh wait.]

Midgard is the realm of the humans, but most Midgardians refer to it as Earth.

[ They can be confused together. Fabulously confused. ]

It's a different world than mine, I think. That the name is so similar to a city on Gaia is uncanny, though. I take it you aren't from Midgard?

I'm from Asgard... which is currently on Midgard.

... It's a dreadfully long story.

It sounds it. I've got time, if you don't mind telling it, but of course, you don't have to if you don't want to.

We'd be here for several millennia if I did.

No, but there isn't much that needs explaining if you listen. And there's probably nothing of great import to ask that you can answer.

Not really. Maybe hearing an explanation opposed to some guessing would be useful.

Okay. Where to start...? Well, for starters, you're in the world of Pokemon. The region we're currently in is called Johto and the Pokemon you received is your starter and partner. He, she, or it will be your primary means of protection and advancement in this world, regardless of whether or not you're a trainer or a breeder. At least, until you catch some new Pokemon or purchase some eggs from a breeder or the Breeding Center.

[He nods. He probably heard a some of that from Professor Elm already, but hey he did ask.]

Aye. It's not difficult to follow.

Okay. I mentioned Pokemon are your means of advancement in this world. There are eight gyms in Johto and eight gyms in the newly opened Kanto region for a total of sixteen gyms in all. Trainers, breeders -- anyone who has Pokemon can go to these gyms and challenge the leaders for the coveted badges. If you beat the gym leaders, you also get a special TM and HM with moves you can't get anywhere else and often a good bit of money. Some of these moves, like Fly and Surf, really come in handy.

You can also buy TMs at the Goldenrod Department Store, but not the same ones you get from beating the gym leaders. It's incentive, I suppose.

If you've got this, I'll explain the Gear in detail and also how to catch Pokemon, if you don't already know that.

... Can the bird pokemon not fly beforehand?

They can fly, but they can't carry you until they know the move. It's the same with the move Surf.

[ The most important questions, yes. She inclines her head slightly forward. ]

Alright then. Is there anything in particular you'd like to ask? I'll do my best to answer any questions you have.

In fact, there is! Not that I'm in any particular rush to return, but how long exactly have you been here?

I guess. It is a little strange considering they can fly and swim by themselves without having been taught the moves, but then, this world is nothing if not strange.

[ And she pauses briefly, thinking. ] Mmh... I've been here a little more than a week, but I've been here twice before. Time is tricky here, too. People are returned at the exact moment that they were taken, so you won't really miss anything while you're here, if that's your concern.
